In the aftermath of what has been an intriguing set of election results, perhaps it is timely for us to reflect on just how precious democracy is.
We take for granted, at our peril, the opportunity we have to cast our votes, knowing that any result - win, or lose - is never permanent, and will be challenged through the ballot box again, in time. This sets a democratic system of government apart from others, where no such guarantee is offered to the people.
So, as we look ahead, we should support proposals to extend suffrage, to make every vote count, and to encourage - not discourage - everyone from voting.
To do otherwise would surely be a backward and un-democratic step.
