Jonathan Smith has been closely monitoring the suspension of birthing services at Macclesfield Hospital on behalf of families in Eastern Cheshire.
He says the East Cheshire NHS Trust Board’s decision on 4th. February - to extend the suspension for another 6 months - needs to be challenged.
He has submitted a number of questions to the Board, and these will be considered at their next meeting on 4th. March.
- Why was this decision taken at a hastily-arranged, extraordinary meeting?
- What steps were taken to enable the public to raise objections?
- Why it is only now that essential building works are being planned to facilitate a restart?
However, most importantly, people need to know that the Board is not guaranteeing that the target date of 1st. October will be met, simply that these vital services will not be back in place until at least this date.
18 months is far too long: more than that, and we would have to doubt that they will ever return.
